Two hours later, Gwyneth pulled up at the alehouse in Blackmere. Though the ride had been easy, she was overly warm. The sun had come out from behind the clouds, and her heavy cloak had become a burden.

She called to a youth, who stood at the alehouse door, and bade him attend to her mount, but he made no reply.

“You shall be paid,” said Gwyneth impatiently, bringing forth gold.

“Nay,” said the youth rudely. “I wunt do t’ Devil’s work.” Addressing Orfeo, he added, “You be a fine fellow. Your mistress be a Duchess or summat, ‘n this foul wench hath ta’en thee, I’ll be bound.”

Gwyneth would have laughed had she not been so much troubled. The gray cloak, it seemed, had disguised her all too well. “I am no thief!” said Gwyneth. “I come to seek…my mistress, who hath sent for me. Saw you a lady here on Lammas night? A lady who is lame?”

“I ha’ seen a lame lady. She give me a letter for Court, but they ‘ood not let me pass.”

Gwyneth tried, without success, to learn what had become of the letter. Nor was the youth able to tell her where Marie was now. ‘Twas of no use to question him further, she decided, so she bade him again to tie up her horse.

The youth dropped the coin she proffered into the top of his right boot, and then took hold of Orfeo’s reins. “He shall feed i’ yon field, t’ back of Cobbie’s,” he called over one shoulder, as he began to lead the horse away.

“Wait!” the Princess cried. “Saw you on Lammas Night a man dressed all in motley?”

“Happen I did,” said the youth, standing stock still. “He were wi’ her. Mawky fool.”

“Know you where he is?”

“Aye.”

“Will you bring me to him?”

“Bring yoursen, an you please. He be a’ Cobbie’s Inn.”
